Twin TDL analyser measuring HF and H2 for Lithium Ion battery safety testing

Our customer was looking for a unique combination of measurements to provide insight into the hazard potentials of fires that involved Lithium Ion batteries. Evolution of hydrogen could present a fire or explosion risk and they are right to be concerned over levels of HF due to its extreme toxity and reactivity.

After consultation with our esteemed principal Airoptic and deep discussion with the customer, the solution was to provide an extractive Tunable Diode Laser analyser, with twin lasers and a common gas cell, all wrapped up in a neat 19″ enclosure.

GasEyeTM Extractive is a laser spectrometer that uses single line molecular absorption spectroscopy. A semiconductor laser emits a beam of infrared light which passes through the process and impinges the detector on the receiver side. When the target gas is present the light intensity changes and this can be used to determine the concentration of the measured specimen. The wavelength of the radiation emitted by the laser is chosen to match the specific gas absorption wavelength. The laser continuously scans this single absorption line with a very high spectral resolution. The measurement is very selective due to narrow band nature of the laser light.
